The average annual gross salary was estimated at €13,896, with legislators, senior officials and higher management earning the most, according to figures just released by the National Statistics Office.
The figure refers to basic salary, so it excludes bonuses, overtime and allowances.
Those working in financial intermediation have the highest average gross pay, which amounts to €16,545.
Giving statistics from the Labour Force Survey for the second quarter, the NSO said the ranks of employed persons numbered 161,279 while those unemployed totalled 12,109. In addition, 175,688 people were classified as inactive, meaning they were neither employed nor registered as unemployed.
The highest rate of employment was within the 25-54 age group, with 68 per cent of the segment in employment. Most of the unemployed were people starting out in the job market, falling in the 15-24 age group.
The majority of employed males were employed in the manufacturing industry (18.5 per cent) and in wholesale and retail trade (16.6 per cent) while most females worked in education-related activities (15.6 per cent) and in wholesale and retail (14.5 per cent).
