Austria's trade deficit widened in April as exports fell faster than imports, official data showed.

Austria ran up a trade deficit of €651.7 million in April, compared to a deficit of €315 million in March, the statistics office Statistik Austria said.

A year ago, Austria's trade balance had shown a surplus of €137 million. Imports fell by 1.9 per cent to €8.45 billion in April, while exports were down 6.1 per cent at €7.799 billion.

In the four months to April as a whole, Austria had a trade deficit of €1.628 billion, compared to a deficit of €1.259 billion s in the corresponding period of 2008.

In 2008, Austria ran up its biggest trade deficit in five years of €1.80 billion.
