India's sports minister accused Tennis Australia of acting too hastily in their decision to request the governing body of tennis (ITF) to switch May's zonal Davis Cup tie out of India on security grounds.

"There simply was no reason for them to rush to ITF (International Tennis Federation) without checking either with us or the Indian High Commission in Australia," sports minister Manohar Singh Gill was quoted by PTI agency.

"I regret they have done so. If countries start worrying like that and make such hasty reactions, there will be a negative impact on interactive sports visits in all the games.

"London has seen terror strikes in the past but will the Australian cricket team stop visiting England for the Ashes this year?" Gill asked.

Following Australia's request, the ITF said it would conduct its own security inspection before making a decision on the May 8-10 tie.

A senior Indian tennis official told Reuters on Wednesday there were no security concerns.

India regard Chennai, which held an ATP event at the Cup venue in January, as a safe location.

Security in the sub-continent has been called into question following the ambush of the Sri Lanka cricket team's bus in Lahore, Pakistan, last month.

The incident triggered concern that sport could become a target for more attacks in south Asia.

India also remains nervous after Islamist militants killed more than 150 people in a three-day attack in Mumbai in November.
