Australia's Melbourne Heart football club has signed Malta national football team captain Michael Mifsud on a one-season deal.

"The Mosquito" has scored 37 goals in 99 appearances for Malta.

He has played for several clubs in Malta, notably Valletta and is best known for scoring twice for Coventry City to knock Manchester United out in a 2007 League Cup third-round match. He also played for Kaiserslautern and Lillestrom.

He told the Times of Malta yesterday: “I’m delighted to be going to a city where there is a large Maltese community. Provided that everything goes to plan, I’m banking on their support.”
