Australia is bidding to compete in next year's Asian Athletics Championships in Japan in the lead-up to the 2011 IAAF World Championships, Athletics Australia said.

AA president Rob Fildes said after four years of discussions with the Asian Athletics Association he would meet delegates in New Delhi in October in a bid to shore up Australia's athletics involvement in Asia.

"Athletics in Asia is growing both in interest and performance so it's an exciting time to be joining the 45 nations already invited to participate in the Asian Athletics Championships," Fildes said.

AA said that Australia's inclusion in the Asian Athletics Championships would give important competition opportunities for the nation's athletes ahead of next year's world championships in Daegu.

The Asian Championships will be held in Kobe in July next year with the 2013 meet on track for the Indian subcontinent.
