MEP Miriam Dalli said austerity on its own had left no long-term results and it was an economy aiming to achieve sustainable growth that could truly make a difference.

Investment in socially sustainable projects needed

Dr Dalli was addressing the European Parliament before it voted in favour of a fund to finance projects selected to give Europe an economic boost under the ‘Juncker Plan for Investment’. She said what was needed was investment in socially sustainable projects and initiatives.

As rapporteur for the Environment Committee, she said she would like to see the implementation of projects focused on renewable technology, clean energy, electric transport and the circular economy especially in those countries where such investment was still lacking.
