The number of tourists visiting the island went up by 12 per cent last month when compared to August 2009, according to the latest official figures.

Total inbound tourists numbered 193,115, most hailing from EU member states, mainly the UK and Italy.

However, a significant 22 per cent increase was seen in the number of tourists arriving from non-EU destinations.

Total nights were recorded at over two million. Guest nights in collective accommodation, such as hotels and guesthouses, went up by 15 per cent and those spent in private accommodation by eight per cent.

The average length of stay was 10.4 nights, the same level as the previous August.

Overall, between January and August 903,314 tourists visited the island, a rise of 12 per cent over the same period last year.
