This year's August Moon Ball, being held on August 6, was launched by President George Abela this morning.

The August Moon Ball dates back to 1958 when the Playing Fields Association had organised the first one.

The Chest Fund for Deserving Causes was set up in 1971 and the funds from the ball were distributed to philanthropic organisations.

Dr Abela said that the Malta Community Chest Fund, in aid of whom the ball was now organised, distributed around €2 million a year to voluntary organisations and individuals, especially people who were ill.

The President said chemotherapy cost €9,000 per session and some people needed six sessions, amounting to €54,000.

Ball chairman Justin Zammit Tabona thanked the President and Mrs Abela who were again hosting the ball at the Verdala Palace.

The ball offered a spectacle of light and included the participation of a number of artists including the Versatile Band, the AFM Band and the Police Band.

Works carried out at the Palace this year would be enjoyed by those attending the ball.

Mr Zammit Tabona thanked the sponsors, especially Island Caterers and Marsovin, for their contribution.

Tickets, at €65, can be bought online.
