In one job at least, Lawrence Gonzi would be, in one aspect, a disaster, and brilliant in another. Were he ever to be made a judge we would need no prison, which would be such a huge saving, and no criminal would ever be found guilty of anything. Which would be a disaster.

I refer to his evaluation of the Auditor General's report in the article titled Auditor Found No Corruption, PM Insists (April 23), in which Dr Gonzi said the Auditor had not found any evidence of corruption. With anyone being appointed to judge others, who can think like that, who could ever be found guilty?

The smell of corruption was overpowering but Dr Gonzi seems to have no nostrils. Maybe he thinks the stench of cesspits is a scent. No wonder he has never said anything about the waste treatment plant at Marsascala, where he lives.

Come on, key people who were called to give evidence could not remember details of how things progressed. Enemalta ignored its own condition of having tried and tested technology and accepted instead technology which is on trial and is not used anywhere in the world.

An evaluating company was selected which is blacklisted by the World Bank. Enemalta's chairman appointed boards which eventually went on to award a tender which also benefited a contractor one of whose employees was the very same chairman who had appointed the board. It goes on and on; the list of wonders is endless. But Dr Gonzi has no eyes to see with. Do we have a gullible simpleton for a Prime Minister?

The fact is this contract should never have been awarded like that and those who let it through are now going to go scot free. Who knows why they let it through? There was no corruption, the PM says. They are big shots in the Nationalist Party and even the Prime Minister cannot touch them. To do so would bring his government down. So we have to lump this muck. See you at the polls!
