The government is planning to hold talks with the Opposition on giving the Auditor-General new investigative powers and the resources which his Office needs to carry out investigations more effectively, Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech said in Parliament this morning.
Speaking during the Budget debate, Mr Grech said that the government will also set up a Petitions Committee to receive petitions from the public, even online.
The rules would also be changed so that ministers would not sit as members of the Pubic Accounts Committee when matters under their responsibility were being discussed.
New structures would also be created for parliamentary hearings, facilitating the participation of the regulatory authorities.
Mr Grech, reacting to Opposition comments, also said that no citizenship would be granted before the relevant secrecy clause was removed from the citizenship scheme.
