Audi, the high-end car maker belonging to Volkswagen, said it had halted its car and engine manufacturing activities in Hungary for a week starting Monday.

The one-week stoppage, which had been announced on January 27, will affect 5,500 of the 5,800 employees at the Audi Hungaria Motor Kft plant, said spokesman Peter Lore.

It coincides with a similar halt at the German parent company. Production is scheduled to resume on March 2, said Mr Lore said.

Audi Hungaria halted car production for four weeks in November and engine manufacturing for two to four weeks, depending on the type, in December and early January. The plant, in Gyor, western Hungary, produces motors for Volkswagen, as well as Audi TT, TT Roadster cars and A3 convertibles.

Last year, Audi built some 1.9 million engines and 60,000 cars at Gyor.
