Today’s attack on Brussels was an attack on all of us and the situation is worrying, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said this evening.

Speaking on Newsfeed, Dr Busuttil said Brussels was the EU capital and whatever happened there affected Malta. There were also many Maltese who lived in Brussels and a Maltese man was in fact injured in today’s attack.

“We have to ensure that the secret services and the forces of law and order of all EU countries unite to stop such attacks before they happen. This is already done and many attacks are foiled because of this but more can always be done.”

ARCHBISHOP MERCIECA

Dr Busuttil also paid tribute to Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Mercieca who he said had been a strong backbone to the Church in Malta at a difficult time in history.

SCANDALS

Turning to scandals, he rejected criticism that the Opposition was being negative.

“Negative are those who permit scandals to happen and not those who uncover them and work to ensure that political responsibility is shouldered.”

He said the Opposition had described last year as a year of scandals, little knowing that by March of the following year the scandals of 2015 would have already been surpassed.

The reason as to why Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi and chief of staff Keith Schembri should resign was clear and everyone agreed with it. One could not have the people who were closest to the Prime Minister setting up hidden companies after taking office.

“Their place is not in politics.”

The longer the Prime Minister took to take action, the more the spotlight turned on him. He either lacked the moral fibre to do what needed to be done or was part of the abuse, Dr Busuttil said.

OPPOSITION LEADER IN PARTISAN ATTACK AS EUROPE WEEPS IN SORROW

In a reply, the Labour Party said that on a day in which Europe weeped at the tragedy in Brussels, the Opposition leader opted to go on a party station and make a partisan attack.

To be credible, the Opposition leader should understand when to speak and when to take a step back. Not even had he been in election mode, as he wished, should be have been so partisan.
