Siġġiewi Derby 50
Athleta A-Z Electronics 62
(6-13, 15-12, 19-16, 10-21)

Athleta A to Z Electronics’ excellent season continued yesterday when they retained the Detur Super Cup following a 62-50 win over Siġġiewi in the final.

Joe Galea’s men, who had had the better of Siġġiewi in the Detur Shield final in November, enjoyed a slight edge in the opening two quarters which were characterised by inaccurate shooting from both teams.

Athleta ended the first quarter 13-6 ahead but Siġġiewi, inspired by Marco Matijevic and Adrian Micallef, rallied in the second to narrow the gap to just four points, 25-21.

A balanced third quarter was shaded by Siġġiewi who started the final 10 minutes only one point in arrears, 41-40.

Siġġiewi’s improved performance in the third session raised the prospect of a thrilling climax. Peter Farrugia’s team went four points ahead early in the last session only to fade thereafter.

Athleta profited from their opponents’ shooting woes as they staged a stirring fightback to win the game 62-50, thus maintaining their unbeaten run in all competitions this season.

Siġġiewi’s Marco Matijevic was the game’s top scorer with 18 points while Steve Schembri was Athleta’s leading contributor with 17 points.
