The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has called for tough action after a Times photographer was attacked outside Casino' di Venezia last night.

The photographer was attacked by several persons when he was taking photos outside the premises, thrown to the ground, and injured in the face and other parts of his body. The photographer's equipment was also damaged.

The main perpetrator was identified and PBS have footage of the incident. After the photographer was treated at the nearby health centre, he filed a report at the Cospicua Police Station.

"The IĠM condemns without reservation this cowardly attack and calls on the authorities to press charges against the aggressors. The IĠM calls on the courts to ensure that aggressions against journalists are punished with an exemplary sentence that takes due consideration of the important role that journalists and photographers fulfil in a democratic society. It is unacceptable for members of the media to be treated in this way when they are fulfilling their duty in a lawful manner," the institute said.
