Former Malta tennis champion Gordon Asciak this week failed to leave his mark in another on-court sport but with a different racquet - squash.

Playing in the SRA Malta Open O-40 tournament at the Marsa Sports Club, Asciak, now dedicating most of his time to tennis coaching, saw his way through the opening round with 3-0 win over Charles Cuschieri.

However, his stay in the competition was cut short when he was ousted in the second round by seeded player Stuart Marsh 3-0. In the semi-finals, Ivan Balzan beat Peter Wirth and Brian Taylorson had the better of Marsh. The final and third place play-off will be played this morning.

The finals for juniors and the main draw will also be played today at 2.30 and 4.30 p.m. respectively.
