With the draws of the 2009 BOV League made yesterday, the focus of attention was the announcement by ASA president Robert Ebejer that he will be stepping down as the top man of the association.

The interim president said that the association will be holding an extraordinary general meeting on June 1 during which a new president will be elected.

There will be two candidates running for the post, Remy D'Amato, presently serving as ASA secretary, and Dr Austin Sammut.

Ebejer said that during his tenure of office he feels that he has given his best to boost aquatic sports in Malta, waterpolo in particular, and that his successor will have bequeathed a rich legacy.

Ebejer spoke of the progress made in the administrative and technical sectors and that the way ahead offers exciting prospects.

He referred to the recent European B qualification matches earlier this month which saw Malta heading the group ahead of Georgia, Ireland and Finland and moving on to the finals in Lugano at the beginning of September.

As for the summer season, the programme will start on Saturday with the traditional Sportswriters Association Cup between San Ġiljan and Sirens to be followed by the match for President's Cup between Sliema and Neptunes.

When the draws for the league competition were made, Sirens were tied with Marsascala in the first match on May 29. This fixture will be followed by Exiles against Neptunes and Sliema against Marsaxlokk on May 30. Ta' Xbiex and Otters are also taking part.

The league format will be the same as that of the last year, with the teams playing against each other in a preliminary round robin, after which the top four teams will contest Division One and the rest Division Two.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Clyde Puli yesterday presented the Player of the Year award to Sliema's Jonathan Valletta and the second division award to Michael Rizzo, of Exiles.

Edward Muscat Azzopardi, Head Marketing at Bank of Valletta, was also present for the draw.
