The stage of a unique open-air arena tucked away in the premises of the Żabbar Band Club Tal-Grazzja will be restored after the Planning Commission gave its consent for works to be carried out.

With the stonework of the stage proscenium still in a good condition in spite of having been exposed to the elements for over 60 years, only minor restoration works are needed.

But due to rain water seepage, the roof structure above the stage is badly deteriorated and most of it will be replaced. The structure consists of a rudimentary system of steel joists supporting rows of stone slabs.

The stage structure, with its art deco proscenium, is the only one of its kind in Malta. It is reported to have been built in the 1950s when the property was already being used as a band club.

The arena has a seating capacity of about 400 persons.

It was formerly the walled garden of the spacious 19th century residence in Sanctuary Street, called the Blue Arena. It served as an open-air cinema as well as a performance space for theatrical productions.

The arena was designed specifically in a 1930s to early 1950s style but its creator is unknown.

During this period, innovative styles were introduced locally, inspired from spectacular works overseas and cleverly adapted using globigerina limestone.

Local architects were successfully providing revellers with a taste of the vibrant art deco and its variants, which was so much the rage in the ever-growing world of entertainment.
