Arsenal and Aston Villa had different objectives to reach last season.

While Villa unexpectedly reached the FA Cup final, their most important achievement was to retain their place in the Premier League.

Arsenal attained two targets, yet other aims again went missing.

While the Gunners retained the FA Cup, beating Villa in the final, they also made sure of their place in the Champions League. Next season, Arsene Wenger will mark his 20th year as Arsenal manager.

The Londoners improved from fourth to third but that was not quite what manager Wenger had in mind from the outset. Arsenal will now have to act decisively in the transfer market as they look to become England’s champions.

In mid-February Villa sacked Paul Lambert and engaged former Tottenham man Tim Sherwood who took a great task in pulling out the Midlanders from the mire of relegation. As a bonus he also took the team all the way to the FA Cup final.

Villa finished 17th, two places below last year’s final position.

In the domestic cups, Villa’s feat in the FA Cup was something the fans cherished even if they were wiped off by Arsenal.

In the League Cup, Villa went down to Leyton Orient 0-1 at Villa Park in the second round.

Arsenal have now become the sole leaders in the all-time FA Cup winners’ list with 12 successes.

They were eliminated in the early rounds of the League Cup by Southampton – 1-2 at the Emirates Stadium.

In the Champions League, Arsenal went down to Monaco on away goals rule after a 3-3 aggregate.

The Gunners were poor in the opening leg in London after a 3-1 upset to the Ligue 1 side. The 2-0 second leg victory in Monaco was in vain for Wenger’s men.
