Yesterday’s accident between a bendy bus and a car at the Coast Road in Salini could have potentially had far worse consequences had it not been for the quick-thinking bus driver, Arriva said in a statement this evening.

The company said that the bus was hit on its side by an oncoming vehicle which seemed to have veered on to the wrong lane.

It said that, on seeing the other car approaching, the bus driver took immediate evasive action, swerving away as much as possible to avoid the collision.

“Through this commendable behaviour, the bus driver managed to avoid a head-on collision."

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital, but has since been discharged. Two bus passengers and the driver of the other car were also injured.

One of the passengers and the car driver were later discharged while the second passenger remains in hospital under observation.

Arriva said that its personnel went on site to aid passengers and help the authorities with their investigations, which are ongoing.
