Arriva will be introducing random alcohol and drug tests for its employees this week as part of the company-wide policy to bolster health and safety at the work place.

The company’s human resources manager Pauline Saliba explains that the tests are not a response to a problem but “a proactive approach to ensure maximum safety”.

She says all employees, including the managing director, could be selected for the 20-minute “non-invasive procedure”.

Tests will be conducted randomly, each time on a selected number of employees. But the company may also conduct tests if it suspects a person is under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

“Arriva is committed to help staff members who inform the company they have an addiction problem,” Ms Saliba says.

Alcohol and drug testing forms part of all employees’ contracts and a positive result leads to disciplinary measures and a possible summary dismissal.

Alcohol testing is done by means of a breathalyser. A first reading is obtained by holding the instrument in front of the mouth while the person talks. A second reading is taken when the person blows into the machine using a disposable spout.

Ms Saliba says the company adopts a zero tolerance policy but if the alcohol level is below the legal limit of 35mg disciplinary measures may vary. She adds that employees taking medicine that may include alcohol must inform the company.

The drug testing kit is used to swab sweat from the forehead and neck and after adding sterilised water a reading is given in 15 minutes. Ms Saliba explains that the kit is used to test for cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ecstasy-like substances.

If an employee tests positive to drugs, the company doctor conducts a urine test to confirm the first result.

“Arriva has no intention of naming and shaming employees but we strive to have the highest level of safety for customers and fellow employees,” she says.
