An arrested man was taken to hospital on Sunday night after he injured himself banging his head against his cell door while locked up, police said on Monday.

In a statement, the police said that the man, a Tunisian national, had been acting aggressively and damaging his cell at police headquarters when he began banging his head against the door at around 11pm.

Police called an ambulance to take the man to Mater Dei Hospital. The man continued to lash out and injured a sergeant escorting him to receive medical treatment.

The man had been arrested earlier on Sunday in Mellieħa for having behaved aggressively in public. He resisted arrest, police said.
