A man was charged with offering jobs at the Freeport in exchange for a fee of about €2,300 a head.

Simon Spiteri, from St Julians, appeared before Magistrate Edwina Grima and pleaded not guilty to defrauding five men out of a total of €11,645 by promising to find them jobs at the Freeport in September 2006.

In October 2007, the Freeport had said it had been informed that someone who identified himself as Simon Spiteri was allegedly asking for money and promising assistance to those interested in working at the Freeport. It had emphasised that the individual did not have any connection with the Freeport and that no one was authorised to receive money in order to secure employment at the Freeport.

Police Inspector Maurice Curmi prosecuted.

Lawyers Josè Herrera and Veronique Dalli were defence counsel.
