A Romanian man who was seen on CCTV stealing €2,700 from the Aroma restaurant in Sliema admitted to the crime in court today, and also admitted committing another robbery on the following day.

Silvius Pileander, 25, resident in Swieqi, was seen on CCTV slipping behind the unattended counter and stealing a wad of cash from the till of the Aroma restaurant earlier this month.

He was arrested in his house late on Monday and was found to have dyed his hair in an attempt to hide his identity.

During his arraignment this morning, he admitted the theft and also admitted stealing €200 from another shop in Sliema on the following day.

His defence counsel said the accused suffers schizophrenia. He asked for the case to be put off until evidence could be produced.

The case was put off by a week.
