Armistice Day - the anniversary of the end of the First World War 'on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month' in 1918, was marked with two events in Valletta this morning.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna held a ceremony at the Upper Barrakka Gardens which included the firing of the guns from the saluting battery at 11 a.m.

At the Siege Bell memorial, a 'Poppy Day' commemoration was held for school children, where there was singing, poetry reading and other events to focus attention on the Great War, the Second World War and other conflicts in the world.

Poppy wreaths were laid on the monument.

Parliamentary Assistant Stephen Spiteri attended.

Meanwhile, in a more vivid reminder of war, the AFM's Bomb Disposal Unit this morning safely removed a wartime bomb found in a construction site at Tigne'.
