The disused underground 'A' power station in Marsa will be partially open for viewing as it hosts an exhibition by architecture students on how they feel Marsa should be redeveloped.

Called A Vision for the Redevelopment of Malta’s Industrial Heartland, the exhibition opens on Friday (5-8pm) and continues on Saturday and Sunday (9am to 1pm).

"Marsa is synonymous with industrial harbour activities, with the Power Station, and with ship-building. It is closely associated with sports, and with horse-racing. It is unfortunately also associated with pollution, industrial decline, immigrants and other socio-economic problems. At the same time, it is practically the gate through which all north-south traffic has to pass, and, in particular, through which all journeys  to the airport or to the Harbour, have to traverse. Strategically, it is therefore optimally located. It has other assets, ranging from the archaeological to built and industrial heritage, from the visual and functional relationship with the sea to proximity to educational and employment opportunities," the university said.

The final year architecture students were invited to project what the Marsa/Inner Harbour area would look like in 2050.

The students worked in multi-disciplinary groups, producing strategic visions for the area. In a second stage, each student proposed and detailed a project that supported one of the formulated strategies.

It is these projects that are exhibited in A Station, Marsa Power Station, courtesy of Enemalta.
