Architecture Project has been selected as part of a group of honourable mentions in the prestigious Philippe Rotthier European Prize for Architecture for 2011.

The jury who selected AP is made up of high profile professionals and experts in the field of architectural practice, theory and criticism, as well as historians and economists.

The theme for this year’s award scheme was The Age of Renovation and sought to discover projects which helped to regenerate an urban setting.

AP’s Valletta Waterfront and Cruise Passenger Terminal will be illustrated in the award’s scheme catalogue, along with other projects from top international firms which were also selected from among 101 proposals received from 19 European countries.

The project for the Valletta Waterfront will also be exhibited and presented in the catalogue of the exhibition, which will take place at the Architecture Museum in Brussels from October 16 to November 20, before being presented in Paris and other cities throughout Europe.

Design work on The Valletta Waterfront and Cruise Passenger Terminal project was begun by AP in 1999. The project, developed for Viset plc, includes a contemporary intervention at the foot of Pinto Stores, consisting of a new cruise passenger terminal.

This insertion develops the genus loci of Valletta and adds yet another layer to the rich historic stratification of Grand Harbour.

Pinto Stores was selected as an ideal location for the terminal since it constitutes an important part of the historic waterfront.

AP operates as a network of architectural design practices with offices in Malta (1991), Croatia (2005) and the UK (2007). Historical and technical research is at the core of the office’s concern with design, partnered with an inherent dedication to context and heritage.

Architecture design, master planning, restoration theory and practice, sustainable architecture, engineering services, education and publishing are the core areas of expertise of AP’s team of around 50 professionals.
