Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela and Opposition Whip David Agius formed part of a cross section of people from all walks of life, including police officers, a journalist and a nurse, who had their feet washed by Archbishop Charles Scicluna during the Maundy Thursday celebrations at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.

The ceremony commemorates the Last Supper that Jesus Christ had with his apostles before being crucified. The Archbishop yesterday led the Good Friday liturgy at St John’s Co-Cathedral when the account of the passion according to the gospel of St John was read, prayers were offered and the faithful kissed the crucifix.

At the end of the function, Holy Communion was distributed. Since Mass is not said on Good Friday and today, the holy hosts used were those consecrated during the Maundy Thursday liturgical celebration.
