Archbishop Paul Cremona said today that the faithful should not be indifferent to what was happening in Syria, and they should pray for a peaceful solution.

He made his comments during Pontifical Mass to celebrate Victory Day, the feast of Our Lady of Victories. The feast is locally celebrated as marking the end of the Great Siege of 1565 and the end of Malta's involvement in the Second World War in 1943.

Mgr Cremona also appealed to an end to racial prejudice. Our Lady had borne Jesus Christ for all people, whatever the colour of their skin and whatever their religion, he said.

Devotion to Our Lady had to mean respecting and loving everybody.

Our Lady should also serve as a model of solidarity. Jesus Christ had preached solidarity, and the faithful, if they truly lived their religion, should show solidarity with those who arrived among them, the Archbishop said.

It was true that practical problems cropped up, and, the Archbishop said, the authorities should seek to solve them even in the context of European solidarity.
