A group of Maltese cyclists recently took part in the Granfondo San Cataldo race in Sicily.

The race was part of the Sicilian mountain bike championship, a 40km offroad route including no fewer than 1,075m of vertical ascent through forest paths, rocky terrain and technical sections.

More than 100 participants were on the starting line of what turned out to be a gruelling race in very hot and humid conditions.

To the surprise of the organisers, Marie Claire Aquilina finished first in the women's race after a superb performance.

Etienne Bonello wrapped up a fine day for the Maltese duo with a third-place finish behind Pro Team Hiker duo Mirco Farnisi and Michele Riggi.

Jason Vella and Gerard Said, the other Maltese riders in the group, finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The participation of the Maltese cyclists in the Sicily race was made possible thanks to the backing of sponsors Greens Supermarket, BBB Bike Parts, the Cyclist and Real San Cataldo MTB Club.
