The Chief Justice has advised newly sworn-in lawyers to be faithful to themselves and their profession’s code of ethics and not become “mercenaries” who would do anything for money.

“You are not there to do anything your clients tell you at all costs – you will serve them best when keeping your integrity and not by reducing yourselves to mercenaries who will do anything – even if it’s illegal – for money,” Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri said.

In a few words, peppered with many jokes, Chief Justice Camilleri welcomed 65 lawyers – 49 women and 21 men – who took the oath of allegiance and of office yesterday afternoon in court.

He admitted that his exam papers, set for his University credits, were not the easiest of the course. “I know I was very demanding and that not all of you had words of praise for me after sitting for my papers,” he said with a smile.

Even though they worked hard to reach the stage of yesterday’s ceremony, their work was not over. “It is a starting point and a new phase in your life. I had the privilege of contributing slightly towards your achievement,” Chief Justice Camilleri said.

He told them not to let him down and to prove they were skilled lawyers by respecting the court: “You are now its officials.” This respect also had to be reflected in their behaviour, which meant no crossed legs or chewing of gum.

“Earning respect should not be done simply out of duty but needs to be earned through being punctual, well prepared for your submissions, being respectful of each other, loyal to yourselves and the courts,” he said.

But most of all “do nothing to lengthen court procedures,” the Chief Justice emphasised.

Chamber of Advocates president Reuben Balzan also welcomed them to the profession: “This oath is a great responsibility and it’s easy to forget it as time goes by. Remember that the code of ethics is there to help us act responsibly.”
