A net to keep out jellyfish has been installed in Pretty Bay, Birzebbuga, in the first official trial of its kind in Malta.

The net covers an area of 625 square metres, with each side measuring 25m and reaching a depth of 2.5m.

It has been installed by the Physical Oceanography Unit of the University of Malta in conjunction with the five-nation Med-Jellyrisk Project.

Project coordinator Alan Deidun said officials will be monitoring the performance and environmental impact of this net.

Similar nets have been installed in Elba, Lipari, Lampedusa and Tunisia.
