A police inspector and a sergeant were slightly injured while arresting a man yesterday at about 9.30 p.m., in Triq il-Korp tal-Pijunieri, St Paul’s Bay.

The police said that the man, 33, who lives in St Paul’s Bay, first insulted the inspector, who was directing traffic during the Summer Carnival celebrations.

The inspector stopped the man and asked him for his particulars but he became suspicious of the name and identity card number given. The man was told  he was being detained until the details were verified. They eventually turned out to be false.

The man tried to flee and the inspector physically stopped him. A constable  called for backup. It was only then that the man was successfully arrested.

A police car and a sergeant’s uniform were damaged by the man during his arrest.

This was the third time police officers were injured  in as many days.

On Friday, a sergeant and a constable were slightly injured when they were attacked by a man, 26, who lives in Nadur, outside an entertainment establishment in Triq Għajn Qasab, Nadur.

A sergeant also sustained slight injuries in an argument in Triq San Ġorġ, St Julian's, yesterday.

Acting Commissioner Raymond G. Zammit wished the policemen a speedy recovery and strongly condemned the incidents. He emphasised that any form of violence against members of the Force will not be tolerated and that all available legal means will be used to safeguard their health and safety.

Meanwhile, the Police Association this morning called for insurance cover for all members of the police force.
