The Health Ministry clarified this afternoon that a missing bust at the Addolarata Cemetery was that of former MUT president Alfred Buhagiar, who died in 1962. He was union president throughout the 1950s.

It was correcting an earlier statement which had said that the bust was of Alfred J. Buhagiar, the former MUT and CMTU president, who died five years ago.

Current MUT president John Bencini had told timesofmalta.com that he had been assured by Mr Alfred J. Buhagiar's family that there was never any bust on Mr Buhagiar's grave.

The ministry apologised for the error.

The ministry has asked the police to investigate and will be considering measures to improve security.

A monument to stillborn babies was also stolen last month from the Addolorata.
