Since my first weeks as German Ambassador to Malta, I had enquired about the existing commercial relations between our two countries, and was glad to find out that Germany's presence in the Maltese industrial scene is very strong and wide-ranging.

During the state visit of President Guido de Marco to Germany in November 2001, the oft-mooted idea to found a German-Maltese Chamber of Commerce became more imminent.

It was especially Henry Borg - who was also a member of the Maltese delegation accompanying President de Marco - who after this visit took the first important steps to set up an organisation with the main aim to foster the common interests of all those who represent German business interests in Malta.

I welcomed the idea as I am convinced that the German business presence in Malta is set to increase over the coming years, now even more, following the Maltese people's decision to become members of the European Union.

That is why the setting up of this German-Maltese Chamber of Commerce is taking place at a very historic moment, not only for Malta but for our whole continent.

From our part, Germany's position was always very clear, that if the Maltese people should decide to become our equal partners in the EU, we would gladly welcome them and assist wherever the need arises.

As for the German-Maltese Chamber, the German Embassy in Malta fully supports this project as it will create a focal point for both Maltese and German authorities as to with whom to communicate whenever an issue arises.

It is positive that this Chamber is creating an interlocutor with whom we can discuss and create new initiatives for the benefit of both, as two entities playing in one team.

On a personal note, I have to admit that the setting up of this German-Maltese Chamber during my tenure as Ambassador, fills me with great joy and satisfaction.

I hope that the seed being sown will bear the desired fruit, and I am fully confident that the results achieved will promote further the idea that the link between Maltese and German businessmen is strong and fruitful.

I thank the founding members led by Mr Borg, as it is through their insight and courage that this Chamber was made possible; as well as the Maltese Chamber of Commerce, and the German-Maltese Circle, who gave their full support.
