BORG. On February 28, CARMEL, passed away peacefully at Mater Dei Hospital. He is mourned and remembered by his wife Maria, his children Noel, Ruth and her husband Stephen, his grandchildren Mark and David, other relatives and friends. The funeral cortege will leave Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow at 2 p.m. for Lourdes church in Paola where Mass praesente cadavere will be held at 2.30 p.m. followed by interment in the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. MICALLEF. On February 27, ANTHONY of Ta’ Xbiex, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his wife Maria, née Mantegna, his daughters Mariella and Claudia, relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 1.30 p.m. for St John of the Cross parish church, Ta’ Xbiex, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2 p.m., followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. MUSCAT. On March 1, at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital, SAVIOUR, aged 82, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his children Mary and husband Bernhard, Joyce and husband Mario, Frank and wife Rita, Joe and wife Grace, Sefora and husband Lino, Charles and wife Dorianne, John and wife Josianne and Hubert, his grandchildren Marcus, Jeremy, Reuben, Matthew, André, Christian, Maria, Johan, Maria, Leroi, Isaac, Janthé, Jadeah and Izayah, his brother and sisters, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 3 p.m. for St Catherine old church (San Girgor), Żejtun, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 3.30 p.m., followed by interment at St Gregory Cemetery, Żejtun. Talks by diplomats

A series of monthly talks will be given by English-speaking ambassadors resident in Malta namely the British High Commissioner, the Irish Ambassador, the Ambassador of the United States of America and the Australian High Commissioner.

The theme of the talks, organised by the English-Speaking Union of Malta, will be the same: Ethnic, Cultural And Linguistic Pluralism In An English-Speaking Nation but each diplomat will bring to the talk his and her own national perspective, history and cultural experience by examining what the four nations have in common as liberal democracies and how each, in their own way, embraces multiculturalism, pluralism and diversity as the core to their own national concept.

The first talk will be delivered by British High Commissioner Louise Stanton at St James Cavalier Music Room, Valletta, on March 9, at 6 p.m. The public is requested to be seated by 5.45 p.m.

She will be followed by Jim Hennessy, the Irish Ambassador, on April 14, US Ambassador Douglas Kmiec on May 19 and Anne Quinane, the Australian High Commissioner, on June 16.

Thanksgiving Mass

The National Council of Women of Malta will be celebrating International Women’s Day and the European Year for Volunteering 2011 with Thanksgiving Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta at 6.30 p.m. today.

Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Paul Cremona with the participation of the St Paul’s Choral Society, under the directorship of Hugh Agius Muscat, accompanied by organist Elisabeth Conrad and soprano Arienne Gaerty.

Cat show

If you think your cat has star qualities, now is the time to put them to the test by registering it for the International Cat Show organised by the Malta Feline Guardians Club.

Applications for the show, to be held at the ballroom of the Phoenicia Hotel, Floriana, on March 27, have just opened and will close on March 18.

The club has invited two World Cat Federation judges, Antonello Bardella from Italy and Andeas Kretschmer-Kraiczek from Germany, to preside over the judging.

Social work lecture

A lecture entitled Developments In Social Work Practice And Community Care: The UK Context will be delivered by Bob Cecil at the University’s Gateway Hall E on March 9 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mr Cecil is a principal lecturer in social work at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK. He acts as consultant and trainer to a number of health and social care organisations and his present main area of study is social work education. He has published widely, mainly in Britain and France.

Mr Cecil will be visiting Malta at the invitation of the University’s Department of Social Policy and Social Work.

Talk on marriage

The Cana Movement will hold the second public talk in its series A Healthy Marriage at Mgr Gonzi Hall, Catholic Institute, Floriana today at 7 p.m.

The guest speaker is Anthony Rutter Giappone, who will trace the movement of human love in the person – a love which reaches its realisation in marriage.

He will explain how this natural institution becomes for Christians a sacrament of love and a source of grace and power in the celebration of one’s marriage.

Fitness activities

The Malta Sports Council will be holding a selection of fitness activities for women on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day. The activities will include yoga, ballet, aerobics and zumba and will be held at the Cottonera Sports Complex between 5 and 7 p.m. The council can be contacted on 2166 0658 or at programmes@sportmalta.org.mt.

Mission Fund tombola

The Mission Fund will hold a tea tombola in aid of Maltese missionaries working in Third World countries on Sunday at 3.30 p.m. at Pembroke parish hall. Tickets can be obtained from the Mission Fund in Mosta or at the door.
