MESSINA-FERRANTE. On February 18, at St Anne’s Hospice, Manchester, Sr JOAN, aged 74, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss the nuns of the Community of St Joseph of the Apparition, her sister Josephine and her husband Mario Padovani, her brother Herbert and his wife Elizabeth, Monica and her husband Frank Salt, her brother-in-law Tony Micallef Trigona, widower of her sister Maria, her beloved nephews and nieces, their spouses and children, as well as family and friends here and abroad. Funeral arrangements are taking place in the UK. A Mass for the repose of her soul is being celebrated on February 26 at 5 p.m. at St Patrick’s church, Sliema (parking available within the school grounds). May she rest in the arms of the Lord.

PUGLISEVICH. Suddenly, on February 20, AUSTIN of Msida (ex-football referee), aged 72, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. History of English-Speaking Union

Alan Lee Williams, visiting professor at the Department of Politics of Queen Mary, University of London, will be delivering a public talk on The English-Speaking Union: A History of Our Time at the Music Room of St James Cavalier, Valletta, tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Prof. Williams, who has had a long and most distinguished career in politics and academia, will be speaking about the history of the English-Speaking Union since its foundation as a charity in 1918 and how it developed in tandem with historic events in the world over the last tempestuous 93 years.

The event is organised by the English-Speaking Union of Malta.

Thanksgiving Mass

Thanksgiving Mass marking International Women’s Day and the European Year for Volunteering will be held on March 2 at St John Co-Cathedral, Valletta at 6.30 p.m. Patrons are requested to be seated by 6.15 p.m. Archbishop Paul Cremona will officiate and the St Paul Choral Society, under directorship of Hugh Agius Muscat, will participate together with organist Elisabeth Conrad and soprano Arienne Gaerty. The National Council of Women said everyone is invited, especially those working in the voluntary sector.

The annual general meeting of Din l-Art Ħelwa will be held at the organisation’s headquarters in 133, Melita St., Valletta on Saturday at 11 a.m. Members are invited to attend.
