BONAVIA. On January 1, ­GREGORY (known as Girgor), aged 72, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Annie, née Mifsud, his children David and his wife Jeanine, Marie-Claire and her husband Luc Léonard, James and his wife Nerissa, his grandchildren Daniel and Thomas, Elsa Marie, Gianluca and Katrina, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 1.45 p.m. for St Theresa Sanctuary, Birkirkara, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2.15 p.m., followed by interment at Naxxar cemetery. BORG. On January 1, AMALIA, widow of Michael, aged 93, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her son Joseph, daughter Mary Rose and her husband Joseph Brincat, Maurice and his wife Agnes, her grandchildren Kenneth, Darren, Jesmond and Pierre, her sisters Carmenina, widow of Buonvincino Azzo-pardi, Margerita, widow of Herbert Cesario, other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Central Home, Mosta and at Mater Dei Hospital. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 2 p.m. for St Mary’s parish church in Birkirkara where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2.30 p.m. followed by interment at the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. MIZZI. On January 1, at St ­Vincent de Paul residence, EVA, née Galea, widow of Anthony, of Valletta, aged 86, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her children George and his wife Lina, Charles and his wife Margaret, Anna and her husband Simon, Silvia, widow of Joseph, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Sta Vincent de Paul today at 1.30 p.m. for Sta Venera parish church, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2 p.m. followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. PORTELLI. On January 2, JOE (Tal-Mekren) aged 52, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Rita, his son Edgar, his mother Maria, his father Pietru, his sisters Ġorġa, Pawla, Kelina, Angel, Ġemma, Doris, Nancy and their families, mother-in-law Carmena, in-laws, Joe, Sunta and Peter and their families, nephews and nieces, his uncles Peppi, Ninu and Toni, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Gozo General Hospital on Thursday, January 6 at 3.45 p.m. for St Peter and St Paul parish church Nadur, Gozo, where a Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 4.30 p.m. followed by interment in the family grave at Nadur cemetery. Journalism Scholarship

Applications for the Harold Scorey Scholarship have opened, offering the successful candidate the chance of undertaking training in broadcast journalism.

The scholarship is a bursary not exceeding €3,000 and is intended to cover full or partial costs of training – professional courses or attachments – in journalism which portrays news and events through traditional or modern audio/audiovisual media.

Offered annually by the government, the scholarship aims to improve journalistic standards in the local broadcasting field. The bursary is open to journalists working in the broadcasting media or aspiring journalists interested in developing their skills in broadcast journalism.

The successful candidate must make use of the scholarship during this year. All applications will be examined by a board specifically appointed to conduct the selection process.
