The Robe

Art by the sea shore

Clinton Carter is holding his third solo exhibition at the Black Pearl Restaurant in Ta' Xbiex.

Called Exhibition Of Nudes, it features works completed in the past two years.

Hailing from Senglea, Mr Carter is a teacher by profession.

The exhibition which will run until March 16 will be open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight, on Saturdays from 6 p.m. until midnight and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Business plan competition

Young potential entrepreneurs can test and develop their business ideas through the Best Business Plan Competition organised by Junior Chamber International Malta (JCI) and supported by HSBC and KPMG.

The best business plan will win a cash prize of €2,500 (Lm1,072.96) while the first runner-up will be awarded a cash prize of €600 (Lm257.51). The best business plans will also be nominated by JCI Malta in JCI's International Best Business Plan Competition and the JCI World Congress, with the chance of winning a further $5,000.

Participation in the local competition is open to all Maltese residents aged between 18 and 40. Public talks

The Malta Group of Professional Engineering Institutions will be holding three talks in succession by newly-graduated architects and civil engineers today at the Corinthia San Ġorġ Hotel at 6 p.m.

Mark Arrigo will present his dissertation on A Comparative Study Of Different Flooring Systems In Office Buildings. He will focus on applications of specific flooring systems suitable for office environments.

In her dissertation on The Influence Of Vertical Load On Shear Failure In Block Work Construction, Josette Theuma investigates the effect of mortar in filled cores and reinforced in-filled cores.

Karl Cutajar will examine the development of the industry, its achievements and the latest systems available. His dissertation is called The Local Precast Concrete Industry: Past, Present And Future.

Tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes will be served at 5.45 p.m. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Heavenly concert

A concert entitled Celestial Moods will be held at St James Cavalier in Valletta on February 29 at 8 p.m.

It will feature harpist Esmeralda Camilleri, clarinettist Lino Pirotta and Tricia Dawn Williams, pianist.

Lecture on Antonio Sciortino

Heritage Malta will be holding a lecture by Dennis Vella on Antonio Sciortino at the Heritage Malta head office in Merchants Street, Valletta on Tuesday at 6.30 p.m.

Mr Vella will explore several trends at the beginning of the 20th century that influenced the sculptor's work.

Sciortino's main influences were naturalism, art nouveau and art deco in which he produced several key works ranging from Les Gavroches and Christ the King to the monument to the fallen in the Great Siege of 1565 and Rhytmii Vitae.

The illustrated lecture will help participants understand better how Malta's most cosmopolitan artist developed his various styles while based in Rome.

Mr Vella, who is the curator of modern and contemporary art at the National Museum of Fine Arts, has written and lectured extensively on Sciortino.

Lenten reflections at University
