The Music Hall Affair

The Institute of Forensic Studies is presenting a public lecture on The Music Hall Affair In 1930s Malta by Paul Knepper, of the University of Sheffield, at the Old Humanities Room, 112, the University, Tal-Qroqq, on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Entrance is Free.

In 1932, London newspapers scandalised Malta's cabarets with allegations of prostitution and white slavery. The Maltese authorities responded with a police inquiry to show that English women who came to Malta as artistes were well treated - and they were. But sexual exploitation of foreign and Maltese women employed as artistes and barmaids did occur and this was the story no one wanted to talk about.

Rather than confront the impact of colonial rule on society, British and Maltese authorities highlighted the immoral character of the women.

White Christmas Event At Paola

Christmas will be coming a few days early to Paola this year with Milied Imdawwal.

Based on the concept of Notte Bianca held earlier this year in Valletta, the event on December 22 will consist of an evening of activities between 6 p.m. and midnight organised by the Fra Antoine de Paule Philharmonic Society with the support of the Roads and Urban Development Ministry and the Tourism and Culture Ministry.

Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett said that every year Paola attracts many Christmas shoppers. Next week's event is also intended to boost business in the locality.

On the night, roads, including the square, will be closed to traffic and there will be an entertainment programme.
