Emanuel Buhagiar has been appointed Animal Welfare Commissioner.

His duties include promoting and implementing educational campaigns on animal protection, improving cooperation among entities and animal rights campaigners and formulating recommendations on animal issues for implementation.

Born in Mosta in 1957, Mr Buhagiar was a police officer in the Forensic Laboratory for 26 years. In 2009 he joined the Animal Welfare Directorate.

In the past six years, he has taken more than 70 cases of animal cruelty to court, including those of the dogs Star and Gaia. He was also crucial for the police to solve the Mosta crucified animals cases.

In 2013 he was appointed secretary of the Animal Welfare Council.
