A young man with an anger management problem was today remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to having last Saturday provoked a violent episode when the woman, who had hosted him at her home decided he should move out.

Alex Junior Mamo, 19, was escorted to court under arrest over a string of charges related to the violent incident which broke out at the woman’s Zurrieq residence last Saturday evening.

The prosecution explained how the woman had decided to terminate the arrangement, making it clear to the young man that he was to pack up his bags and leave.

Expecting the man to call for his belongings, the woman had requested the police from the local police station to provide her with security.

Two officers were standing by at the woman’s home when her former flatmate turned up, breaking down the door in a fit of anger.

Upon finding himself face to face with the police officers, an argument broke out during which one of the policemen ended up being bitten and scratched by the teenager, who later confessed that “when angry, darkness descended upon me and I was unable to control my anger.”

The court heard the accused plead not guilty to having threatened and assaulted the police sergeant and constable, slightly injuring one of them, ripping his shirt and even smashing his specs.

The youth was further charged with having refused to obey police orders, uttered foul words in public, whilst also threatening and harassing the woman.

Defence lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar, appointed by the court to provide legal assistance to the man who lacked the means to have a private lawyer, declared that no request for bail was being made since his client was currently homeless and could provide no fixed address.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella, remanded the man in custody.

Inspector Charlotte Curmi prosecuted.
