A group of sixth form students attending the Sir Michelangelo Refalo Centre for Further Studies, Victoria, Gozo, learnt more than they bargained for when they carried out an environmental project at Dwejra, an internationally protected zone, as part of their Systems of Knowledge course.

After being given the go-ahead by St Lawrence council, Alana Mifsud, Marla Mercieca and Zeodielle Bajada visited the site, spoke to locals and tourists about its importance, and had ample opportunity to admire the beauty of the area.

They remarked: "Unfortunately, due to the lack of appreciation and awareness in modern society, there are people who still do not know the true significance of environmental conservation. It is very clear that our communities do not have enough concern for the natural ecosystems which are being slowly destroyed.

"People visiting Dwejra should not only keep it clean and tidy, but also take time to note the vegetation which gives Dwejra its singular and spectacular characteristics.

St Lawrence council is already putting in a strong effort in this regard, and with everyone's co-operation we can safeguarded Dwejra," they said.

"The environment is our natural patrimony. It is our duty to conserve the environment and pass on values of respect and dignity that it deserves," they concluded.
