The political party Azzjoni Nazzjonali said today that stone and inert construction waste being excavated from the SmartCity site should be used for land reclamation or the creation of reefs, rather than dumped at sea at a depth of 150 metres.

If deposited on Hurd Bank, which is only about 10 kilometres off Ricasoli and has a depth of around 40 metres, it would eventually result in an artificial island where wind farms could be located to help generate clean power, the party said.

These artificial reefs could also be built to shelter Malta's bays.
