The 2017 alternative Western Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts by Indonesian director-writer Mouly Surya will be screened at St James Cavalier Cinema, Valletta, today at 8.30pm.

The plot revolves around a newly- widowed woman, Marlina (Marsha Timothy) who faces a gruelling home invasion by a gang leader. She must outsmart her sadistic captor and fight the wider patriarchal forces that bind her, and – in the Western tradition – embark on a transformational journey.

Surya’s film has the makings of a cult classic, pushing storytelling boundaries and reworking a classic formula to create a new, alternative dialogue – one that makes space for new stories told from a female point of view.

Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts will be screened at St James Cavalier Cinema, Valletta, today at 8.30pm. There will be encore screenings on April 21 and April 27 at 8.30pm. For tickets, visit www.kreattivita.org.
