From a gritty Harlem nightclub to the open plains of the West, from the Hudson River School to American surrealism, the March 3 Sotheby's auction sale covers the sweep of American Art in the 19th- and 20th- centuries.

Among the most interesting collections are works from the estate of Mary Warburg, which includes three sculptures by Gaston Lachaise, an artist who also features in the collection of Mary Schiller Myers and Louis B. Myers.

The James S. Copley Library collection contains many engaging scenes all of which include newspapers, from Thomas Waterman Wood's Reading the Gazette to William Verplank Birney, The Restorer, where broken teacups and vases sit on sheets of newspaper on the restorer's table. Also of note are five paintings from a private collection by Martha Walter, all depicting the waiting rooms at Ellis Island, teaming with mothers and babies.

The Western section of the sale includes a fine Charles Marion Russell bronze of a bear and her cub and Joseph Henry Sharp's portrait, Eagle Star, New Mexico.
