Diplomatic appointments at ambassadorial level should be based on a person’s capabilities and aimed at garnering the greatest benefit for the country, particularly in the expansion of commercial relations, the Nationalist Party said

Referring to several media reports highlighting a number of appointments that are expected in the coming days, Foreign Affairs spokesman Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici and European Affairs spokeswoman Marthese Portelli said the opposition would have expected such appointments to be scrutinised by Parliament’s European and Foreign Affairs Committee.

The Nationalist Party said it believed such appointments should not be made according to the new Malta for all criteria but should be based on an open and transparent process with the abilities of the nominated candidates being scrutinised by Parliament.

They should not be a thank you to party activists for their work during the electoral campaign.

The PN thanked all those who, to date, served within the diplomatic corps with dedication to promote Malta.
