The Foreign Ministry has insisted that the Maltese ambassador to Tripoli was never declared personal non grata by the new rulers in Tripoli and his current recall to Malta was normal practice planned some weeks ago, for consultations.

Mathaba Libya News had reported that Malta  would replace its withdrawn ambassador after a complaint by the Libyan Foreign Ministry, and station a new one at Tobruk.

Tripoli and most of Libya is currently being run by a government which does not have international recognition. The recognised government was forced to flee to the eastern town of Tobruk.

The ministry said that there is no intention to send any Maltese ambassador to Tobruk and there is no intention to close down the Maltese embassy in Tripoli.

A Charge d'Affaires will be available during the ambassador's absence from Tripoli.

"The embassy's presence in Tripoli is an expression of the solidarity that the Maltese authorities have shown, and will continue to show, with the Libyan people," the ministry said, while stressing that Malta would never interfere in the internal affairs of Libya.
