Twelve-year-old Italian sailor Michael Amadori won the 15th Edition of the Optimists Class Euromed Malta Championship held over the past four days at Mellieħa Bay.

Amadori, who represents the Circolo Velico Ravennate, finished ahead of Arnau Gelpi, of Spain, and Britain’s Sophie Holloway.

Victoria Schultheis, of the Malta Young Sailors Club (MYSC), was the first Maltese in the overall classification after she placed fourth.

Amadori’s victory is Italy’s second Euromed title in 15 editions with the other success coming from 14-year-old Valentino Valacchi in 2003.

The Optimist Novice Class was won by Guido Gresta, of Italy, who finished ahead of fellow compatriot Mattia Arcovito while Malta’s Ryan Mercieca placed third.

Jack Hanslope, of the United Kingdom, topped the Laser Radial Class.

Karl Miggiani, of the MYSC, and Roberto Briffa, of Birżebbuġa Sailing Club, completed the podium line-up after placing second and third respectively.

In the Laser 4.7 Class all top three places were won by Maltese sailors – Edward Fleri Soler placing first in front of Thomas Bonello Ghio and Zachary Zammit.

The Optimists Class Euromed Malta Championship was organised by the Malta Young Sailors Club with the cooperation of the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport and the Mellieħa Local Council and is held under the patronage of the Malta Sailing Federation.
