Renault's double world champion Fernando Alonso again upstaged Formula One's title rivals with the fastest lap in final free practice for tomorrow's season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, who was fastest in yesterday's damp second session, lapped the bowl-like Interlagos circuit where he won the championship in 2005 and 2006 in a best time of one minute 12.141 seconds.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, the 23-year-old Briton who leads sole Brazilian rival Felipe Massa by seven points and can become Formula One's youngest champion tomorrow, was second fastest on a bright and clear morning.

Ferrari's Massa, who has been on pole position at his home circuit for the past two years, was fourth on the timesheets behind McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen.

The two title contenders dominated the session until, in a repeat of his Friday afternoon performance, Alonso vaulted to the top with a late flying lap.

Hamilton, who blew his chance of becoming the first rookie champion at the Sao Paulo circuit last year, need only finish fifth to take the title this time even if Massa wins the race as expected.

Ferrari are 11 points clear of McLaren in the constructors' standings.
