Fernando Alonso emerged quickest at the end of final practice for tomorrow's Belgian Grand Prix.

After the heavy rain of yesterday and near washout of the second session at Spa-Francorchamps, blue skies and a sprinkling of sunshine at least allowed the drivers a full hour of running ahead of qualifying.

Alonso, who has a 40-point lead over Red Bull's Mark Webber in the drivers' standings, took advantage of the improved conditions to post the quickest lap of one minute 48.542secs for Ferrari.

Kimi Raikkonen, tipped to finally win his first race this year for Lotus, was closest to Alonso, just 0.141secs adrift.

That is despite the fact Lotus have opted not to run their new straight-line speed-boosting device this weekend due to the difficulties in set-up and having lost so much time yesterday.

Sauber duo Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi suggested they could be top-10 contenders tomorrow with times just over three tenths of a second behind Alonso as they finished third and fourth respectively.

Jenson Button was half a second down in fifth for McLaren, and just one thousandth ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

Webber, who will have to contend with a five-place grid penalty for the second time in three races for an unscheduled gearbox change, was down in sixth, 0.622secs off the pace.

Romain Grosjean (Lotus), reigning champion Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) and Force India's Paul di Resta completed the top 10, the latter 0.840secs down, with everybody else at least a second off.

That included McLaren's Lewis Hamilton in 12th place, the Briton 47 points behind Alonso and knowing he cannot fall further behind if he is to challenge for the title.

Mercedes' Michael Schumacher, set for his 300th grand prix this weekend, was in close attendance in 13th, followed by the second Force India of Nico Hulkenberg.

Schumacher's team-mate Nico Rosberg found himself bottom of the timesheet after a gearbox problem brought his session to a halt early on, leaving him with just five laps of dry running under his belt prior to qualifying.
